Coaches Support

Aboriginal Coaching Program

The ASC, in collaboration with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC), are working together to develop the coaches of tomorrow. As such, coaches are viewed as a cornerstone of community sport and recreational development. Their role as agents of social change is important because their expert guidance can have a direct and lasting impact on the healthy and active lifestyles of community members, specifically youth. Because of the important roles Aboriginal coaches play, the CAC and the ASC have made it a priority to educate and promote the value of certification and to establish meaningful participation of Aboriginal peoples in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). The Aboriginal Coaching Program contains culturally relevant materials meant to engage Aboriginal coaches and empower them to make a positive, long-lasting impact in their communities.

There are a wide variety of coaching supports available through the Coaching Association of Canada and the ASC relationship including:

Aboriginal Coaching Modules

The professional development of Aboriginal coaches through NCCP certification has been identified by the ASC as a national priority. In order to educate and promote the value of the NCCP and to establish meaningful participation of Aboriginal peoples in this national program, the ASC embarked on a multi-year process to develop supplemental training material for Aboriginal coaches taking NCCP workshops. The result of this process is the Aboriginal Coaching Modules (ACM), which responds to the need for a national training curriculum with content that reflects the uniqueness of Aboriginal cultures, values, and lifestyles.

ACM Learning Facilitator Training

The Learning Facilitator Training Guidelines are based as much as possible on Aboriginal perspectives of learning. However, our Learning Facilitators will add their own perspective as they gain more experience in working with the material.

Aboriginal Apprentice Coach Program (AACP)

The AACP is a partnership between the ASC, the Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Bodies (PTASBs), the Provincial/Territorial Coaching Representatives (PTCRs), the Canada Games Council (CGC), and the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC). The program provides the opportunity for each province and territory to send 2 coaches of Aboriginal ancestry to the Canada Games in apprenticeship roles.
